This semester, our course in journalism provided valuable insights into the field, helping me understand both its history and its ethical responsibilities. One of the first things I learned was the importance of ethics in journalism. We discussed how journalists have a duty to report the truth, maintain objectivity, and respect privacy while avoiding sensationalism. Ethical dilemmas, such as balancing the public’s right to know with individual privacy rights, were also addressed. This emphasized that trust between the media and the audience is paramount, and unethical practices can damage that relationship.

Additionally, I gained an understanding of the different forms of journalistic content. We explored the structures of news articles, feature stories, opinion pieces, and investigative reporting. I learned how each type of writing requires a different approach, from the inverted pyramid structure in hard news to the more narrative-driven approach in features. The class also emphasized the importance of clarity, accuracy, and conciseness in journalism, no matter the format.

Lastly, the course provided a deep dive into the history of journalism. From the early days of print journalism to the rise of digital media, I gained a clear understanding of how journalism evolved in response to technological advances and societal needs. We examined key historical events, such as the rise of the printing press and the role of investigative journalism in shaping public opinion and policy.

In conclusion, this semester has been transformative in teaching me not only the technical skills of journalism but also the ethical and historical contexts that define the profession. I now feel more confident in approaching journalism with integrity and creativity.
